Prologue Part 2
December 11th – December 30th,1995

But then one day, he asked a question Kame was sure a Martian would definitely never ask.

The two were walking down one of the hallways in the hospital but due to his plastered leg the Martian used his crutch to get around. Kame didn't mind walking slowly enough for the Martian to walk beside him the same way the Martian never minded the fact that Kame didn’t speak.

The older boy bobbed beside Kame as he turned to him while walking. "Hey, since we're friends now, what's your name?"

Kame felt time stop as his heart began to pick up speed. The little boy thought and thought until he finally had an idea. He quickly reached for the pen and notepad he kept handy in his pocket.

Kame hadn't an idea what he was doing, but before he knew it, he deliberately wrote down his name the way Koki's father had taught him one night. The letters were foreign even to little Kame, but he was sure that was how his name was spelt in English.

He slowly handed the paper that read Kamenashi Kazuya in English to the Martian.

The Martian, luckily for Kame, couldn't make head or tails of the writing. "What are all these funny doodles and lines?" He whined childishly and Kame quietly wondered if the Martian really was older than he was. "Unless you really are the Martian!"

Kame laughed silently at the other boy’s naivety.

Quickly, the plastered leg covered his confused look with a smile. "I know! This is English, right? So you can't speak Japanese!" Kame's eyes beamed at the explanation the Martian had proposed for him. "No wonder you don't like to talk...you're Japanese must sound really weird." Kame smiled, neither nodding nor shaking his head.

The fifth day Kame had made his new friend; the little boy had begun to wonder whether or not he would ever retrieve his voice. He desperately wanted to talk to the Martian.

The Martian seemed to sense Kame's discomfort as the two sat on the bench outside the hospital one night because he draped his jacket around Kame's thin shoulders. "Girls should wear their winter jackets outside."

Kame stared back at the Martian in horror.

Kame wondered if Martian’s had school in outer space, or if this one particular one just wasn't the smartest Martian student. 'They probably learn different stuff than we do.' Kame concluded to himself, silently forgiving the Martian for not knowing that he was a boy.

The Martian saw Kame's frown and began to babble, his attempts to make Kame feel better a little pathetic. That was until he had told Kame a story on the rooftop. "Hey, did you know that to us Martians there's no difference between talking and not talking?" The boy began as he gently grabbed a fist full of Kame's delicate fingers.

"'Cus you see Martians can't really communicate with people of Earth anyway so it doesn't matter if a Martian speaks Japanese or English because either way other Martians will be able to understand what you're saying."

Little and sensitive, Kame couldn't help but begin to cry. The Martian quickly saw this and regretted his poor choice of words. "H-Hey! If you cry you'll just make all the Martians in outer space sad." Kame looked through his small tears at the other boy.

A little shyly, the other boy began to enclose Kame in a loose hug. "T-This is because Martians don't let other Martians cry!"

Kame nodded, smiling widely as he returned the innocent hug.

The two spend even more and more time together. When Koki or his parents would come to visit Kame, he would always be smiling or not in his room at all. Somehow Kame didn’t mind that he couldn’t talk and that his friend understood that he couldn’t and was still friends with him.

On Christmas of 1995, Kame and the Martian snuck out of the hospital and followed the sounds of singing until they had reached a church. The slipped into the back row and stood together while listening to the people in the church sing.

Cautiously, the Martian slipped a hand into Kame’s, directing his gaze elsewhere when the innocent Kame looked at him. Kame smiled broadly as he watched as the Martian grinned foolishly.

That Christmas, Kame received the gift of true happiness.

The next day at the hospital the two snuck off out into the garden as they both leaned against a lean willow tree and plastered leg let Kame listen to his music device. The alien showed Kame a song he claimed belonged only to Martians.

If we remember that far, far away
The future is shining somewhere
We only have to be afraid a little bit
As we sit here under the beautiful blue sky

Nostalgic colors fill the window

If I can be with you again, before I turn
To the future that is shining somewhere
I want to see our time change
Underneath that large sign

There’s someone I can’t meet again, in this city
So, I open the window

The proceeding day, the Martian secretly took Kame out of the hospital and the two went to an amusement park together. They rode the ‘Martian Adventure Tour’ together.

Kame happily bought cotton candy and practically skipped all the way back to the bench where the Martian sat. With the Martian, Kame had experienced the happiest day of his life.

“Did you have fun today?” The boy cooed as he laughed heartedly.

Kame nodded his head furiously.

The Martian smiled, “Me too.” He stopped his train of thought for a moment before taking out a small camera from his pocket. “Then let’s take a picture for the memory.” Kame nodded keenly as Martian took out a type of camera he only assumed he must have bought from outer space.

The Martian stuck the camera out in front of their faces and the two grinned widely as the older boy snapped the photo.

The older boy stared confused at the photo before smiling. “I know!” He yelled in his excitement and ripped the photo down across the center in a very uneven fashion.

Kame stared at him in amazement. “Here!” The Martian said enthusiastically as he handed Kame the half of the photo that had the picture of his friend.

“I’m going to keep your picture and you can keep mine, okay?”

Beaming, Kame nodded.

“Hey why don’t you ever talk?” The Martian asked as soon as the two returned to the hospital. “It’s really unfair you know.” He sulked childishly, folding his arms across his small chest. Kame just stared back blankly.

“Fine then, I won’t talk either.” Kame raised an eyebrow at the Martian’s odd suggestion. He found it rather silly for him not to talk if he was able to. “Talking is so tiring, so from now on we’ll use writing, okay?”

Kame smiled in agreement and the two sat down and began to write on their notepads until they were finished. The Martian opened up their secret spot behind the brick and stuck his letter inside; Kame soon followed in suite.

“Next year…” The Martian began. “No, too soon.” He stopped his train of thought. “5 years from now? Not exciting enough.” Kame looked back at his friend in amusement. “13…yes! 13 Christmases’ from now we’ll come back and uncover the mystery, okay?”

Kame only stared at the odd boy with the casted leg. “So 13 years from now I’ll be…” The boy began to count using the fingers on his hands. “I’ll be 24…do you think that will be too long?”

The younger male shook his head. “So when that time comes…you’ll really be here?” Kame nodded. “Okay then…the Christmas of…” Once again, the Martian began to count using his fingers. “The Christmas of 2008, will you really come back?”

Kame nodded again.

The Martian seemed to do something very human-like, Kame noticed, as the older boy’s face began to flush with a deep scarlet color. “So…d-do you like me?” He asked nervously.

“I-I like you!” He blurted out when the younger boy wouldn’t respond. The Martian seemed to sense Kame’s worry as he quickly began to cover up his words. “You…don’t have to answer now. You can give me your answer tomorrow.”

Kame smiled at the alien in crutches. The younger boy was more than sure he liked the Martian. “I-I have to go! It’s late!” He yelped and as quickly as he could, the Martian began to shuffle away.

Kame stood at their secret place with a small frown. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to reply, he was just thinking one thing. ‘How does a Martian express what he likes?’ Kame wondered to himself.

But the Martian ran away before Kame could write him his answer. He wanted to tell him that he was his favorite friend. Kame wanted to tell him that he really liked this friend – even if he didn’t know he was a boy too.

Kame felt that that boy was the same as he was. An alien of Earth.

So Kame did the only thing that he could – he wrote his reply and left it behind the brick he was sure the Martian would come check.

At that time, Kame still didn’t know that it was goodbye. It would make the late answer unable to be answered forever.

It was a day later that Kame learnt of his transfer from his doctor. But Kame couldn’t let him go like that. ‘I have to tell him my answer!’ Kame thought frantically. Using his notepad, Kame asked his doctor for help.

The doctor kind of understood that it was important for Kame to find his friend, so he distracted the butler’s that were now pushing the unwilling boy in his wheelchair with his crutch festooned tightly against his chest by his arms.

“I can only give you a limited amount of time, the rest is up to you.” The doctor quickly told the boy as he nodded hurriedly and got out of his wheelchair, and began as fast as he could on his crutch.

He found Kame at their secret place, Kame ready with his pen and pad to give the awkward Martian his answer. But that wasn’t the case as the boy hurriedly took the pen out of Kame’s hands and wrote down something on his piece of paper.

“This is my number. Call me, okay?!” He wheezed heavily as he ran back out. Kame tried to go after him, trying to find his voice. Unable to shout anything, the best he could do was run after the boy and clutch lightly to the back of his shirt.

That was all it took for the Martian to turn back to Kame and very lightly press his lips against the younger boy’s. The Martian was sure that was hardly even considered a kiss, their lips barely brushing each other’s.

“Remember to call me!!!!” was all that was heard as the alien ran off on his crutch.

Unable to think straight with his little mind, Kame began to do the only thing his mind registered him to do – run. He ran as fast as he could, trying to scream out for the Martian friend of his.

By the time he was outside, Kame saw the Martian get into an elaborate black car. Kame ran after the car that began to move and screamed out at the top of his lungs. He had really wanted to tell him the answer than he could not say in time.

“WAIT!!!!”

The Martian stuck his head outside of his window, staring back at the small figure running after the car. He stared in raw surprise at Kame. At the voice. At the fact that who he assumed to be a girl, just spoke.

“CALL ME!!!!” The boy screamed back from the window, his father yelling at him to bring his head back inside the car.

“MY NAME IS AKANISHI JIN!!!!”

He wasn’t sure whether or not Doodles and Lines had heard him but soon enough the smaller child’s silhouette disappeared from Jin’s sight completely.

It wasn’t much later that Kame himself had been discharged, his voice had returned and his family, as well as Koki’s were very thankful. Even though he had the ability now, Kame still didn’t talk much – wanting more than anything to see the Plastered Leg Martian again.

Although he had the Martian’s number, he had been too afraid to call, unable to think of what the Martian would say if he found out that Kame had unintentionally lied to him by not being able to tell him that he was a boy.

Years passed and Kame had lost the letter from the Martian that contained his number. Too much time hadn’t passed after that when Kame joined Johnny’s Entertainment with Koki.

But still, no matter how much time had passed Kame still could not forget about his first best friend – his first and only immature love.

The one thing that kept Kame going was that he would be able to see the Plastered Leg Martian again on the Christmas of 2008.

And this time, he would be able to give him his reply.

Yes…if you’ve ever watched the drama ‘Silence’ it’s similar to that, but not entirely. It’s going to be my first non-angst fic! YAY! Well not enough angst to have it’s own genre. I'd love to hear your view of this chapter. Until next time, bye-bye.
